A brief history and the definition of electricity

Much has been said about those who discovered electricity there are several names but one of the names that became the talk of the valley was Benjamin Franklin his flying kite experiment during the thunderstorm paved a way for others to do more research on the topic when it comes to a definition it is the flow of charge or electric current or electrons it travels in the path of least resistance and it goes in the complete circuit.

  1. Electrical Shock:-Occurs when current passes through the body and its severity depends upon the path, duration, and frequency.
  2. Fire and explosion:-Happens when the current passes through faulty wires, overloaded circuits, and if there is a spark in hazardous areas where electrical circuits are installed.
  3. Electrical Burns:-It is an outcome of an electrical shock when the person comes in contact with live electrical wires depending on the path, frequency, and duration the person can get 2nd or 3rd degree of burn.
  4. Inadequate or improper wiring:-As the name suggests if the wiring is not as per the OSHA standard or done with substandard wires.
  5. Exposed or Live electrical parts:-If there is damaged insulation or underneath is exposed.
  6. Overhead power lines:-There is no protection with it and all the parts of the wire are exposed.
  7. Ungrounded Electrical tools and equipments:-If the electrical tools and equipment are not grounded in that case of faulty connection currents comes into the body which is very dangerous.
  8. Defective and damaged power tools:-Tools and equipment which are not third-party certified and substandard.
  9. Faulty wires and wires with unrated insulation:-Wires without double insulation and without a third-party rating.
  10. Defective and unrated equipments:-Electrical equipment which are not inspected and without third-party certification.
  11. Circuits that are overloaded:=The circuits on which too much equipment is connected or if the insulation is broken.
  12. Usage of electrical tools and equipment in wet condition.
  13. Utilizing defective PPE or substandard PPE.
  14. Using unrated fuses and Junction boxes.
  15. Untrained crafts

Preventive Measures or Safety Precaution from electricity

  1. To prevent the folks from electrical shock correct rating of fuses and circuit breakers need to be installed in addition damaged and faulty wires must be discarded.
  2. Preventive maintenance needs to be done in accordance with the OSHA standard to check the circuits, wires, and equipment.
  3. To avoid this situation there must be a barrier and warning signs to avoid unauthorized entry in the live electrical zone and prior training is to be made mandatory.
  4. Wiring of the electrical equipment needs to be conducted by a competent person and rated standard wires must be used.
  5. Exposed or live parts must be removed with the correct rating of the wires as per the OSHA standard.
  6. Working near the overhead power lines should be avoided as far as practicable but if it is not feasible proper protocols of safety as per the OSHA standard and the respective need to practiced to avoid any danger.
  7. Metal ladders must not be used near the overhead power lines.
  8. Metallic jewelry must not be used while works on electrical equipment.
  9. The equipment and tools which are being utilized must be protected with a standard rating of the fuses, ELCB, and GFCI and should be grounded.
  10. The wires of the tools and equipment must be doubly insulated.
  11. Defective and damaged power tools must be discarded from the area and third-party certified tools must be used with the proper inspection sticker.
  12. Faulty wires should be immediately discarded from the area and double insulated standard wires with third-party marking must be used to prevent the scene.
  13. Defective equipment needs to be removed immediately from the area for rectification and standard and the third party rated equipment with inspection sticker must be used to escape the scenario.
  14. Preventive maintenance needs to be done in the periodic manner of the equipment, tools, and circuits and color coding must be implemented after checks.
  15. In wet areas, all electrical equipment needs to shut off until it becomes dry and wires must be raised at a certain height to avoid electrical shock and fire.
  16. Rated and third-party fire extinguishers as per the electrical standards must be installed near the circuits as a preventive measure.
  17. PPE Standards which meet OSHA rating must be used during work on electrical equipment and defective PPE must be discarded from the area.
  18. While working on electrical equipment in plants and industries LOTO procedure must be applied.
  19. Written permission in the form of the electrical work permit must be taken from the client or area owner to avoid any danger pertaining to the equipment.
  20. Underrated fuses and junction boxes must be removed from the area in order to avoid any dangers pertaining to electricity.
  21. Residual current devices need to be installed in the areas to avoid the dangers of electricity.
  22. Trained and competent crafts must be engaged to work on electrical equipment.
